Offbeat Guitars "Jax 4" 32" Scale Fretless Bass in Ghost Whitewash Finish on distressed Eastern White Pine featuring a Hades Roasted Maple Medium Scale Neck with Lined Wenge Fingerboard, EMG TBPCSX and TBPAX Active Pickups and BTS Control, Gotoh Res-O-Lite Tuners, Gotoh Vintage-Style, Solid Brass Bridge, D'Addario Black Nylon Tapewound Strings, and Aged Hardware.
I find it interesting that medium scales aren't more popular than they are. As someone who played mostly 34" scale basses for 25 years and switched to predominately short scales for the last 15 years, I feel like it's kind of the "Goldilocks" of scale lengths. It doesn't feel like a huge change like going from a 34" scale to a 30" scale, but you play this one all night instead of a 9.5 lb. Jazz bass, and you'll have a lot more energy at the end of the gig to wrestle that SVT back into your vehicle. You might even have enough energy to help the drummer load their kit into their vehicle. (I am so kidding about that.)
The bass body is made from knotty and distressed Eastern White Pine with a Ghost whitewash finish. The pickups and electronics feature an EMG active TBPCSX in the neck and their TBPAX in the bridge. The ceramic and steel magnets in the neck pickup have a slight scoop to them with nice lows and highs, whereas the AlNiCo magnets in the bridge position tends to fatten up the mids, which is definitely something you want on a fretless. The EQ section features a volume, volume, BTS Control (separate bass and treble cut and boost). The treble control, which allows for 4 different frequency ranges has been set to boost the lowest part of the high end, helping to enhance the "mwah" sound. The knobs are solid brass aged almost to black and the rest of the hardware is aged nickel.
The neck is Hades roasted maple neck with a lined wenge fingerboard and features carbon fiber stiffening rods. The nut width is a Jazz bass sized 1.5", and the finish is a satin oil/poly blend. The neck gets sanded to 600 grit, and the edges of the fingerboard have been slightly rolled. All of which makes it a real joy to play.
A set of D'Addario black nylon tapewound strings runs between a Gotoh vintage-style, solid brass bridge over a Tone Ninja nut to a set of Gotoh Res-O-Lite tuners.
The bass weighs in at a nice and light 6.95 lbs, but it balances perfectly on a strap thanks to the lightweight Gotoh tuners (and also because it's a medium scale, in case you missed that earlier).
The bass comes with a 20mm padded Gator 4G gig bag.
